What to see in Montepulciano

The best way to discover the elegant old town is to walk through Porta al Prato, in the lower part of the city, in order to follow the course that leads to the peak of the hill, with Piazza Grande, which is also the epicenter of many cultural events of international importance. It will be a succession of imposing Renaissance palaces, artisan shops, churches with beautiful facades and even more beautiful and interesting interiors.

Also worth seeing is the beautiful tower and the Gothic facade of the Town Hall. In front of the town hall is the Duomo, dating back to the late sixteenth century.

Just below the walls you can admire the temple of the Madonna di San Biagio, a Renaissance work by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. The church is considered a very high example of architecture, so much so that Michelangelo was inspired by it when he designed what would have been his plans for the construction of the Basilica of San Pietro in Rome.

Considered one of the most important Etruscan cities, Chiusi fascinates visitors thanks to the famous Labyrinth of Porsenna, which is accessed from the Cathedral Museum. The labyrinth, which winds under the square and the streets adjacent to the Duomo, is an ancient aqueduct of the Etruscan era.

Events

Every year in August, the eight districts of Montepulciano compete in the Bravìo delle Botti, a race through the historic streets of the village accompanied by flag-wavers and re-enactments. In the same period there is the theatrical event of Bruscello Poliziano; while the Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte welcomes tourists and curious people with the best musical and artistic performances. In February there is the Preview of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: an event designed for all wine lovers.

Typical dishes and products

An itinerary through the beauty of Montepulciano can only end with a dinner based on local products, such as Cinta Senese salami or pappardelle with wild boar, all obviously accompanied by a glass of Vino Nobile. If you love fresh pasta, sit in front of a plate of pici all'aglione, a condiment typical of the Val di Chiana. Finally, do not miss the opportunity to see on the table the Chianina steak cooked on the grill.
